What type of adoption plan is available for me?
In our agency, you create your own adoption plans.
In a closed adoption you receive no on going information after the birth of the child. In a semi-open adoption you may receive pictures and letters from the adoptive family several times each year. In an open adoption you have periodic visits with the adoptive family and child. Choice Network support's families choosing open adoptions. There are many different levels in between closed and open. It is truly about what feels right for you.
How do I choose an adoptive family that is right for me?
Choice Network will help you to identify what is most important to you in selecting an adoptive family.
When you have decided on the type of adoptive family you want for your child, we will give you letters and pictures from families that most closely fit your criteria. You may select the family from these letters, or if you choose, you may interview the family you select. The most important part of this process is for you to feel secure in the family you have chosen to parent your child. We will be there to support you in your decision.
How is a family approved to adopt?
Ohio law requires that adoptive families have an approved Homestudy. This process includes a physical exam, financial statement, verification of employment, verification of relationship status, criminal background check, fingerprinting, safety audit of the home and three written reference checks. In addition, each adoptive family must complete 12 hours of training in adoption. All training is facilitated by Choice Network. Finally, we conduct several counseling sessions in the adoptive family’s home to ensure that the family is ready to adopt.
Are there any costs to me in making an adoption plan?
All costs associated with the adoption are paid by the adoptive parents. Counseling and support is provided to you by our agency for as long as needed at no cost.
Will my child be able to find me later in life?
You will complete a form that either permits or denies your child the right to obtain information about you when the child turns 18. The decision is yours.
Do you need information about the birth father?
Certainly an adoption can be complete without the birth father’s involvement. However, this is only in cases where the identity of the birth father is unknown or the birth father refuses to participate in the adoption plan. If you have contact with the birth father, we believe it is in the child’s best interest that the father is informed of the adoption plan. If we are aware of the father’s social and medical history, we are better able to serve the child. We understand that every situation is unique; therefore, the circumstances of your relationship with the birth father will be discussed carefully with you so that the best interests of the child are secure.
